I have had a lot of clients ask me what they should wear for a session. So here’s a guide to help you out
Think of the style you want your setting to be in and dress for it. If we are going to be taking pictures in an urban setting you don’t want to be wearing plaid and overalls, unless that's just you, and if it is let me know. If your photo shoot is going to be in a forest, bathing suits are probably not the best option.
Keep it simple. Stick to Solid colors or simple patterns. Bold, busy patterns distract from what's really important...you, your family, your baby, your kids, your significant other, etc.
If we’re photographing more than one child, it's totally not important for them to match. It's great to let their unique personalities come through. Just stick to a couple of basic colors.
Texture is your friend. This means layers (a sweater over a button down shirt, jackets, layer tees), denim, scarves, hats, and tutus. Texture adds an element of interest to a photo. Layering can also help make for easy clothing changes.
Avoid logos and anything else that might be distracting and date a photograph. A little trendy is ok...just don't over-do it. People’s eyes will go right to the logo. Senior portraits are the exception to the rule. For example: If your son wears RVCA everyday then I think we should capture that, it’s a part of his personality.
Shoes...In some of the shots we will definitely see your feet, so be aware of what you put on them! For children, PLEASE no cartoon character sneakers! If it's warmish weather or summer, go for sandals or something more open. The best idea most times is bare feet. If it's winter, how about some cute, stylish boots...both for the kids and the adults! I’m pretty short (5’2”) so when I pose for my family portraits I make sure I wear something with a heel. It lengthens me out and it makes me look skinnier instead of stocky and chubby.
One change of clothes during the session is fine. More than that and kids (and adults) tend to get impatient. Extra clothing is always a good idea with children in case something gets messy.
The Color Wheel is a good place to look for inspiration. I like to pair up complementary colors, opposites colors on the wheel (Complementary colors are my favorite).
Example- Yellow and Violet
